The first day on a jobsite is a milestone for every apprentice. New surroundings and unfamiliar equipment can be exciting and challenging all at once. Thankfully, no one is expected to figure it out alone.
We created MSC University to support apprentices from day one. Through structured education and practical training, along with the guidance from our experienced professionals, new team members gain the skills and confidence needed to begin their careers with purpose. Rather than completing training before entering the field, apprentices begin working on active jobsites while continuing their education through classroom instruction, hands-on training and mentorship.
Building a Strong Foundation
Every apprentice begins working in the field while also participating in classroom instruction through our partnership with the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER). As they gain real-world experience, the classroom reinforces the concepts and techniques they encounter each day on the job.
Throughout the program, apprentices continue building their knowledge in areas such as:
- – Industry fundamentals, mechanical systems and proper tool usage
- – Safe work habits, hazard awareness and jobsite expectations
- – Professionalism and effective communication
Learning these principles while working on active projects gives apprentices a better understanding of what they’ll encounter each day. They step onto the jobsite ready to learn and eager to continue developing their skills.
Learning Through Experience
Classroom instruction provides the foundation, but experience is what brings those lessons to life. Every lesson builds on the last, creating steady progress instead of rushing through the learning process.
Inside our training facility, apprentices practice techniques they will use in the field while working in an environment where questions are encouraged and repetition builds confidence. They have the opportunity to develop their skills before applying them on active projects, allowing them to become more comfortable with the work and the expectations that come with it.
Combined with the experience they gain on real jobsites each day, this approach creates a continuous learning environment where classroom instruction and fieldwork support one another.
The Value of Mentorship
One of the most important parts of MSC University happens outside the classroom. As apprentices begin working in the field, they are paired with experienced journeymen who help guide their development. Ride-alongs and daily jobsite experience provide opportunities to observe skilled professionals, ask questions and apply what they have learned in training.
That experience extends beyond technical skills. Apprentices also gain valuable professional habits through:
- – Daily guidance from experienced journeymen who share practical knowledge and proven techniques
- – Opportunities to communicate with coworkers, ask questions and build confidence in the field
- – Real-world experience that reinforces teamwork and a commitment to quality workmanship
These relationships create an environment where learning continues every day. Experienced team members share insights that can only come from years in the field while helping apprentices grow into skilled professionals.
Preparing for the Future
A successful career is built over time. Every class, every training exercise and every day spent alongside experienced professionals helps apprentices take another step forward.
MSC University prepares our employees for much more than their first experience in the field.
